Peter Ficklin Recieves Honors for Local Wine & Lifetime Achievement Print E-mail

- Ficklin Vineyards will receive California State Fair’s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award for wine industry leadership and contributions to the advancement of California enology and viticulture. This prestigious accolade will be presented in July at the California State Fair Gala at Cal Expo in Sacramento. For the last 17 years pioneering figures in the wine business have been bestowed with this respected award.

Since its inception with the planting of vineyards in 1945, Ficklin Vineyards has focused on premium Port wine production using authentic Portuguese grape varieties and traditional time-honored methods of production. The Ficklins are being acknowledged for their unique contribution to the California Wine Industry from the very beginning with active participation in experimental grape variety trials through the University of California, the original Wine Advisory Board, the Wine Institute and California State Fair Wine judging. Today, the Ficklins continue to promote the value and quality of California Wine.

“We are truly honored to be considered and recognized along with previous recipients, including many esteemed industry icons so highly deserving of this Lifetime Achievement Award,” said president and winemaker Peter Ficklin. “The success of Ficklin Vineyards through the years was founded with the dedication of two generations before us, and we look forward to continuing that tradition. Every wine produced here is a direct result of that commitment to quality and family."

Walter C. Ficklin, and his sons, David and Walter Jr., collaborated with numerous staff and faculty through the University of California Davis to obtain cuttings and develop the plan to be the first to produce premium Port wines in California. Through that association, Ficklin Vineyards began producing what is still today a consistent award winner throughout the years at major national wine competitions, their Old Vine Tinta Port.

Today, the 3rd generation is in charge, with Walter Jr.'s son, Steven at the helm of the vineyard operations, and David's son Peter directing the winemaking and production. Peter is also a graduate of the UC Davis enology program and was fortunate to have classes taught by some of the same faculty as his father, David.

2012 marks the 10th year anniversary of the Madera Wine Trail, and the Madera Vintners Association celebrated by honoring  three wine industry professionals who have contributed to the region's winemaking success, and a founding member of the of the association at a special "Evening of Accolades" wine dinner held on April 19, 2012 at The Vineyard Restaurant in Madera.

Peter Ficklin was awarded the title of Winemaker of the Year for 2012. Peter is a third generation winemaker and President of Ficklin Vineyards, a winery renowned for its California Port-style wines. The winery was established in 1946 and planted authentic Portuguese grape varieties in the family vineyards. Peter still guides the daily winemaking at Ficklin Vineyards in the production of their highly acclaimed California Ports.

Always a small family owned operation, each step in crafting these Ports receives his personal attention. During his career at Ficklin, Peter has not only continued producing the award winning Old Vine Tinta Port from the solera started in 1948, but also revived the Vintage Port program and founded a Tawny Port solera system producing 10, 15, 20 and 25 year-old Tawny Ports, all consistently receiving national recognition. As part of public relations efforts, Peter has conducted in depth educational Port seminars across the country, showcasing the quality and development of the Ficklin products.

Also receiving awards, were Tony and Kim Kirk of Birdstone Winery as Winery of the year, John Simpson as Winegrower of the Year, and the Lamanuzzi & Pantaleo families of Golden Valley Grape Juice with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The MVA is proud to recognize these individuals who have helped bring success to the region's wine industry.
