MADERA - For the first time in any one at Madera Town n Country Park could remember Saturday, the major league team from the Madera American League won the Little League District 10 Tournament of Champions.

Saturday's win for Madera's Papa Murphy may have been sealed Thursday night with an easy win for Madera American over the four time defending champions River Park Little League (10-0) and a difficult win for Reedley in 8 innings over the Chowchilla Little League (15-10).

Reedley didn't have the pitching coming into Saturday's game because it was all used up Thursday night. For the last five years Little League has had a maximum pitch count a pitcher can throw per game giving the player mandatory rest time between outings.

Saturday Madera's Frank Chavira was well rested on the mound for his four inning outing throwing 10 strike outs and allowing only one hit. First baseman Caleb Bertoncini went three for three at the plate while Juan Gonzales and Peyton Kragie went yard with rockets over the fence into the swap at Town n County.

In the minor league division, the River Park Dodgers beat Chowchilla's Associate Feed.

With the end of the Tournament of Champions, the season of All Star play starts. Teams from Chowchilla to Sanger will meet up in three divisions and battle for the District 10 championship. The kids in the 9-10 and 10-11 age groups can advance to a Northern California championship after winning tournaments at the district and section level.

The 11-12 year old team could battle all the way to Williams Port, Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series that will be broadcasted on ESPN in August. In 2006 the River Park Little League team fell one game short of that goal. Last year's Madera National League team made it to the Northern California Tournament in Chico but did not make the championship game.
