MADERA - The kids of the Madera Unified School District descended on the Madera Fairgrounds Friday morning for a few hours of cotton candy, animals and education. Education at the Madera Fairgrounds? Yes, there is plenty of education going on at the fairgrounds this weekend. There is the lumberjack display, lumber town, master gardeners and of course the animals the kids from the FFA and 4H have out at the barns.

When the fair opened at 5pm they found RDD Hobby Shop and Raceway on the main strip with their remote control race track. For only $5 you can race one of their cars around their track or check out many of the classic toys and hobbies they stock in their story where Howard Road, Olive Avenue and Pine Street meet-up.

At night the 70's/80's rock band Styx took the stage and rocked the crowd with hits like 'Foolin Yourself', 'Renegade' and 'Come Sail Away'. Original bass guitarist and founding member Chuck Panozzo joined the band for several songs and their encore.

Guitarist and singer Tommy Shaw told a story about how his guitar ended up with a 'broken neck'  while checked as luggage flying into Sacramento yesterday and he called a buddy to help him find some where to fix the instrument. His friend got a hold of Venturi House of Music who came to the rescue.

While Shaw told the story about how the owner's husband, Brad Clark, saved the day, anyone who knows Jerry Venturi's daughter Andrea knows it was her talent that fixed the guitar. If I want great wine, I'll call Brad. If I need help with anything musical there is no one better in town than Andrea. Either way, the crowd loved that someone from their hometown was being thanked from center stage and they roared their approval when Tommy changed the lyrics of the song to mention Venturi House of Music and the help they provided.

Today at noon is the junior livestock sale. The kids from the FFA and 4H will be selling their steers, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, rabbits and turkeys. Grab your checkbook and come on out and support the kids. You don't have to spend a fortune on animals to help out. You can donate a $25 or $50 bump on a bid to help the kids out.

This evening Rodney Atkins will bring his country songs to the main stage. Come on out and watch him perform 'Farmer's Daughter', 'Watching you' or one of his newer ones like 'Take a Back Road'. Tickets are still available but I would show up early as the seats that are left may go quick.
