2011 Chowchill Fair Kicks Off - Carla Johnson Named Miss Madera Print E-mail

Chowchilla – The gates flew opened Wednesday to the Madera County Fair in Chowchilla with the Miss & Little Miss Madera County pageants. This year only two girls from the city of Madera competed for the Miss Madera County Contest, while eight little girls (ages 6 to 9) from all over the country competed for Little Miss.


Carla Johnson, the daughter of Carl and Joanna Johnson of Madera, won the 2011 crown. She is a junior at Madera South High School where she is active in the FFA and the varsity golf team. She plans to attend U.C. Berkley where she hopes to become at child advocate attorney and fight for children who need someone to fight for them.

This year’s runner up is Thalea Gastelum. She is also a junior at Madera South High School. She is the daughter of Manuela and Jesus Gastelum. She is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and has been a cheerleader since seventh grade.

In the younger girls contest Christina Fuller won both the talent award and the Little Miss Madera County crown. She is the daughter of Keith and Connie Fuller and is a third grader at Ronald Reagan Elementary school in Chowchilla. Her wish is to become a diabetic physician and work towards a cure for juvenile diabetes for which she suffers.

This year’s runner up for Little Miss is Kylie Cunningham. She is the daughter of Kristin Slutsky and is a second grader at Dixieland School in Madera.

In the Tommy Hawk competition Ryan Diaz won the feathered hat and the honor of starting off the Spring Festival Parade Saturday morning. Ryan is the son Rick and Maggie Diaz. He is a first grader at Alview School. Eli Clairday won the talent competition for the Tommy Hawks with the singing and signing of God Bless America.

The fair runs through Sunday with comedian Gallagher taking the stage Friday night at 8pm with plenty of watermelons and his famous Sledge-o-Matic. Saturday night country duo Curtis and Luckey will take the stag also at 8pm. Fifteen year old country singer Stacy Stone will open for both shows. She also performed a full set Wednesday night.
