FRESNO – Fresno State head football coach Tim DeRuyter announced Tuesday evening that sophomore kicker Colin McGuire is leaving the team to attend to personal issues and will move back to his hometown of Austin, Texas to be with his family.

McGuire, who was excused from the first two weeks of fall camp to be home with his family, leaves school in good academic standing. He has withdrawn from the university.

“We really appreciate the contributions of Colin over the last year and a half, he was a great Bulldog,” head coach Tim DeRuyter said. “Unfortunately he’s got some personal issues that he tried to address earlier this summer and now he’s come to the realization that he needs to be closer to his family in order to address those. We wish him the best as he works through some of the things he needs to.”

McGuire was named to the 2013 Mountain West All-Academic team after his true freshman season when he made 11-of-16 field goal attempts. He ranked in a tie for 36th nationally in scoring last year with 104 points that set a new Bulldog freshman record and he was a key component to Fresno State tying the program record with 11 victories and capturing the Mountain West championship.

McGuire was named the MW Special Teams Player of the Week after his very first game when he kicked a 47-yard field goal with 3:48 remaining against Rutgers that tied the game up for the Bulldogs. Fresno State eventually went on to win that game in overtime and that kick was McGuire's longest of the season.

With McGuire’s departure, the kicking duties will now fall to junior Garrett Swanson and freshman Kody Kroening.
