FRESNO - The Fresno State women's golf team finished what it started Tuesday at San Joaquin Country Club, capping a three-round sweep of the Fresno State Classic to win its second consecutive home tournament dating back to March 2014.

The team completed the day with their lowest score of the season, 883 (297, 296, 290) shooting +19 for the win. Santa Clara was the team runner-up 21 strokes back (+40, 904), followed by CSU-Northridge (+54, 918), Sacramento State (+68, 932) and Santa Clara B (+82, 946).

The ‘Dogs led the team scores the entire tournament, but the real battle was at the 18th hole between senior Machen Ly and junior Hannah Sodersten. Ly, needed a five-foot putt in order to claim the win over teammate Sodersten. Ly made the putt and captured the victory, ending the Classic shooting a 54-hole two-day one-over par 217 (72-74-71).

Sodersten was the runner-up shooting two-over 218 (74-74-70), while sophomore Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir finished in third at five-over (71-78-72, 221). Rounding out the Fresno State group of five, freshman Mimi Ho finished 12th at 14-over (80-72-78, 230) and sophomore Laura Scrivner capped the ‘Dogs scoring team placing sixteenth, with a  score of 17-over (80-76-77, 233).

“My number one goal coming into this tournament was to get the team win,” said Madchen. “I think that the team win was more important than the individual win because I love these girls and they’re so supportive of me, and I am happy that they also got to enjoy a win.”

The individual competitors for the ‘Dogs were freshman Samantha Spencer and juniors Sadye Busby and Kayla Luis.  Spencer finished the tournament in fourth on the leaderboard at seven-over par (73-75-75, 223). Busby ended the tournament shooting 29-over par (83-83-79, 245) tied for 25th. Luis rounded out the competition in 27thshooting 42-over par (86-83-89, 258).

“It was a really fun day for everyone”, said head coach Emily Milberger. “We had good performances on the backside and a great finish. It’s always fun to win at home, especially when we only play here once a year. It is fun for them to compete in front of their families, home crowd and cherished supporters of our program.”

"Be Bold"- The ‘Dogs will be in action again at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Noblesville, Ind. on October 17th.
