Arrest Made in Merced Gas Station Robberies Print E-mail

MERCED - The responsible for the robbery and attempted robbery that occurred at the Smiley’s Shell gas station earlier this month has been arrested by Officer Ramon Ruiz. The arrest was made on Friday night in the 1800 block of I St. The suspect has been identified as Fredrick Brigham.

The first robbery occurred on March12th at approximately 2045 hours. The suspect entered the gas station wearing a dark color sweatshirt with a hoodie demanding money from the clerk. The suspect had his hand in his sweatshirt and simulated as if he had a handgun. The suspect was last seeing running northbound from the station. It was reported approximately 800 hundred dollars was taken during the robbery.

Madera Gang Member Heading to Prison for Murder Print E-mail

MADERA COUNTY - Madera County District Attorney Michael R. Keitz announced that Juan Carlos Amezcua, age 21, of Madera, was convicted of second degree murder in the death of Victor Raqueno, age 28, also of Madera. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the murder charge for a co-defendant, Eucario Avalos Ruiz, age 29, also of Madera, but did find him guilty of participation in a criminal street gang.

A trial for the Madera gang members began on January 30, 2012 in the Madera Superior Court, with a separate jury empaneled to determine a verdict for each defendant. Senior Deputy District Attorney Linda Dunn prosecuted the case for the People.

Four Year Old Left Behind At Restaurant, Reunited With Family Print E-mail

PRATHER - This past Thursday night, deputies responded to the Pizza Factory restaurant in Prather regarding a 4 year old child who had accidentally been left behind by his family. Shortly before 7:00pm, deputies arrived at the restaurant and contacted staff that were watching over the child.

Deputies learned that the child’s family, including the two parents and 9 children, had been having dinner at the restaurant and left at approximately 6:30pm.  Shortly afterwards, staff noticed the little boy seated by himself.

Inmate Tutors Help Inmate Students to Read Print E-mail

CHOWCHILLA - Two dozen inmates at Valley State Prison for Women (VSPW) meet every Monday morning with Ms. Cindy Greer, Literacy Coordinator, to get their work assignments for the week.  In a way, they are teachers, too.

The 24 inmates are literacy tutors for 300 other VSPW inmates who are voluntarily taking classes to become better readers and successfully complete General Education Degree (GED) requirements and tests.

Merced - Police investigated two armed robberies in the south Merced area today. The first robbery occurred at the recycling center next to the Best Buy Market. In the first robbery the suspect was described as a black male adult wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt with a bandana covering his face along with dark sunglasses.

The suspect brandished a handgun at the clerk and demanded money. The clerk than give the suspect an undisclosed amount of money and the suspect fled the area on foot.

Shots Ring Out on Madera's West Fourth Street Print E-mail

MADERA – Shots rang out in Madera Thursday night on West Fourth Street. While an Officer was finishing an unrelated investigation at Madera Community Hospital the victim of a gunshot wound was brought to the hospital’s emergency room by a relative.

The relative advised the officer that the victim had been beaten up. The Officer responded by calling for medical staff at the hospital to come and treat the victim. He was taken into MCH and provided care before being transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for more advanced treatment. The victim is in stable condition.

Merced Police Catch Burglary Suspect In The Act Print E-mail

MERCED - Early last Saturday Merced Police Detectives Paul Johnson and Brian Rodriguez were working a burglary detail patrolling the area of the Merced Mall, when they discovered that the south door to JC Penny had been smashed. The discovery was made before the alarm to the store had gone off. The suspect smashed the south side door with a rock that was later found inside the store.

Once inside, the suspect went directly to the cash registered, ransacked the counter area and left the store without getting any money and only a couple of shirts. Prior to the burglary, both detectives saw an individual who they know as Ronnie Chestnut riding his bicycle in the area. Chestnut was arrested last week for possession of stolen property from the Peraino’s Jewelers burglary that occurred on March 4th and is the same individual who was arrested in a stolen vehicle after he crashed into the Merced Police Department south station on January 31st.
