New Coach Volunteered to Help Chldren's Hospital - Fresno State head football coach Tim DeRuyter was out Tuesday on the corner of Shaw and Blackstone selling papers for Children's Hospital 25th Annual Kids Day.

DeRuyter was one of thousands of volunteers throughout the city selling the special Kids Day edition of the Fresno Bee to help raise money for Children's Hospital Central California.

"I was so happy to be able to help out a great cause for Children's Hospital in the central Valley," DeRuyter said. "It was a lot of fun to be out there this morning raising money and I'm very thankful to all the generous people we have here in Fresno."

Also on the corner of Shaw and Blackstone were former Bulldog football players James Sanders, Richard Marshall, Stephen Spach and Therrian Fontenot.

DeRuyter and the former Bulldogs along with all the other volunteers were asking for $1 for Tuesday's special edition of the Fresno Bee that featured stories about the hospital, published in a special section wrapped around The Bee.

The very first paper that DeRuyter gave away Tuesday morning came with a $100 check, a gracious donation from a Fresno resident to Children's Hospital.

DeRuyter was there for nearly two hours, starting at 6:30 a.m. The rest of the afternoon he will shift his attention back to the team as the Bulldogs hold practice No. 5 of spring football Tuesday afternoon.
