Madera – The Madera speedway will host an open wheel special event this coming Saturday night May 7th, 2011. This event is dedicated to one of the greatest racing families known to the sport of automobile racing, the Vukovich family.

Fans will enjoy Super modifieds, BCRA midgets and a special tribute appearance by the vintage super modifieds, sprints and midgets. Kody and Tanner Swanson will make their only appearance at the Madera Speedway in 2011, with Kody driving in both the super modified and midget races.  Davey Pombo will make a driving appearance in the super modified race bringing another great racing name to the Vukovich Classic.

Bill Vukovich ; December 13, 1918 in Fresno, California – May 30, 1955. He won the 1953 and 1954 Indianapolis 500 plus two more American Automobile Association National Championship races. Several drivers of his generation have referred to Vukovich as the greatest ever encountered in American motorsport.

William John Vukovich, Jr. (born March 29, 1944, Riverside, California), better known as Bill Vukovich II is a former driver in the championship car division of USAC and CART series.

He was named the 1968 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, a result of his 7th place finish. Vukovich raced in the 1965-1982 seasons, with 158 combined career starts, including the Indianapolis 500 in 1968-1977, 1979-1980. He finished in the top ten 85 times, with one victory in 1973 at Brooklyn. He also had 23 National midget car victories in his career, and drove for part of his career in Christopher J.C. Agajanian's midget car.

William John Vukovich III (August 31, 1963, Fresno, California - November 25, 1990 Bakersfield, California), better known as Billy Vukovich III or Bill Vukovich III.  He was a three time starter of the Indianapolis 500. The grandson of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bill Vukovich and the son of Bill Vukovich II, Vukovich III was the 1988 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year.

Billy lll was one of the most popular race car drivers to ever take the track at the Madera Speedway, and one of the greatest drivers to ever turn a lap in a super modified at the Valley’s 1/3 mile track.

Both Bill Vukovich l and Bill Vukovich lll were tragically lost in racing accidents, Bill Vukovich l in 1955, and Billy lll in 1990.

Grandstands open at 5:00pm, and racing starts at 6:00pm. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for youth 6-12, and kids five and under are free. Family packs are available as well. Look for discount coupons at participating speedway sponsors.
