Coaches share philosophies, talk about the history of the Bulldog football program - New Fresno State head football coach Tim DeRuyter paid former Bulldog head coach Jim Sweeney a visit when he was in town for his introductory press conference last week.

DeRuyter, who spoke at his press conference about the importance of honoring and recognizing the history and traditions of the program, went to the home of coach Sweeney to meet him and his wife, June.

Accompanying DeRuyter to the Sweeney's was Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh and Tyler Mariucci, Fresno State Director of Major Gifts.

"It was a thrill to meet Coach Sweeney who built the foundation here many years ago," DeRuyter said. "I told him we would like to build on what he did here and win as many games and conference championships in the Mountain West as he did."

DeRuyter has made it known that all former Bulldogs are welcome to stay connected with the team.

"Coach Sweeney, Coach Hill, and the guys that played for them need to know I want them part of this," DeRuyter said the day he was introduced as the 17th head coach in program history. "I want them around this program and I will reach out to them in a number of different ways and make sure they feel welcome in and around this program."

Sweeney and DeRuyter connected very quickly and showed a mutual respect for one another.

During the meeting, which took place last Thursday, DeRuyter and Sweeney shared football philosophies, stories, names they have both worked with and the history of the Fresno State football program and the future direction of it.

Sweeney liked hearing DeRuyter say he was going to open up the offensive with a spread attack to utilize Derek Carr's arm and talented receiving core while also maintaining balance with star running back Robbie Rouse.

At the end of the meeting when DeRuyter was leaving, Sweeney left the group with his famous final words, yelling "I'm Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred and I'm going to a Bulldog until the day I'm Dead! Go Dogs!"
