Fresno State - Fresno State's $100 million
plus arena played host to it's first sporting event Wednesday night with
the annual Basketball Extravaganza. Nearly 10,000 Red Wavers braved the
cold and traffic jams to check out Fresno State's new jewel, the Save
Mart Center.
Local media entertained the fans with
an exhibition game which kicked the evening off. This was followed by a
free-for-all mascot game in which at one point two balls were being used
to score.
Fan's came alive when former Fresno
State woman's basketball standout Lindsay Logan attempted to hit a
lay-up, a free throw, a three pointer and a half court shot all in 30
seconds.
If she made the shots the fans would
leave with free dinner from Kentucky Fried Chicken and Wendy's. At the
buzzer Logan hit the half court shot to bring the crowd to their feet.
In a men's team verses women's team
three-point contests, Veronica Mack cleaned the court with Shantay
Legans. The junior nailed 11-of-15 threes in the finals against Legans
to win 11-10.
Nikki Wilson also took down Renaldo
Major in the slam dunk contest. Wilson, the crowd favorite, was given
the advantage of a lower net though.
Fresno State's basketball programs
will be back on the Save Mart Center court on Nov. 13 for the season's
first exhibition games. The Bulldogs' men's team will take on the EA
Sports All-Stars at 6 pm while the women follow with a contest against
Team Concept.
The Fresno State volleyball team will
get a bigger stage this week when the Bulldogs host 2002 National
Semifinalist and second-ranked Hawaii at the Save Mart Center (16,116)
on Sun., Nov. 9, 12:00 pm.
The Madera American Little League is
manning a snack bar in the north-east corner. Stop by and help them
raise money for a new press box at Town & County Park. You got to eat
when you are there anyways!
